Dynamic ray tracing and traveltime corrections for global seismic tomography
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a dynamic ray tracing program for a spherically symmetric Earth that may be used to compute Fréchet kernels for traveltime and amplitude anomalies at finite frequency. The program works for arbitrarily defined phases and background models. The numerical precisions of kinematic and dynamic ray tracing are optimized to produce traveltime errors under 0.1 s, which is well below the data uncertainty in global seismology. This tolerance level is obtained for an integration step size of about 20 km for the most common seismic phases. We also give software to compute ellipticity, crustal and topographic corrections and attenuation. 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. PACS: 02.60. x; 91.30. f; 91.30.Ab; 91.30.Cd; 91.35.Pn

High resolution traveltime and slowness tomography
A new 2-D traveltime tomography algorithm has been developed for use with long offset seismic streamer data. The forward problem is solved using initial value ray tracing in Delaunay triangulated grids. The traveltimes are calculated analytically. The linearised joint interface and velocity inversion is regularised via a geostatistical smoothing regularisation based on the formulation of a data...
متن کاملVelocity inversion in cross-hole seismic tomography by counter-propagation neural network, genetic algorithm and evolutionary programming techniques
The disadvantages of conventional seismic tomographic ray tracing and inversion by calculus-based techniques include the assumption of a single ray path for each source– receiver pair, the non-inclusion of head waves, long computation times, and the difficulty in finding ray paths in a complicated velocity distribution. A ray-tracing algorithm is therefore developed using the reciprocity princi...
متن کاملSeismic ray tracing and wavefront tracking in laterally heterogeneous media
One of the most common and challenging problems in seismology is the prediction of source-receiver paths taken by seismic energy in the presence of lateral variations in wavespeed. The solution to this problem is required in many applications that exploit the high frequency component of seismic records, such as body wave tomography, migration of reflection data and earthquake relocation. The pr...

Abstract The ray series method may be generalized using a ray centered coordinate system for general 3D-heterogeneous media. This method is useful for Amplitude Versus Offset (AVO) seismic modeling, seismic analysis, interpretational purposes, and comparison with seismic field observations. For each central ray (constant ray parameter), the kinematic (the eikonal) and dynamic ray tracing system ...
متن کاملPrestack Kirchhoff time migration for complex media
Constructing the seismic image in vertical time, as opposed to depth, eliminates the inherent ambiguity of resolving the vertical P -wave velocity from surface seismic data in transversely isotropic media with a vertical axis of symmetry (VTI media). By ray tracing in the space-time (x-τ)-domain, a traveltime map is built by interpolating the traveltime information along the rays onto a regular...
